Owning and Operating Vehicles in Mexico legally can be a little tricky, and Mexico Paperworks in here to help with your vehicles too. There is a lot of misinformation regarding the new laws, what is expected of a foreigner and what can and cannot be done.
For Los Cabos we offer Vehicle Registrations and renewals of Mexico plated Vehicles, help with fines, fees, impounds, penalties, etc. We also can help facilitate your Los Cabos Drivers Licenses and or renewals.
For Foreign or US plated vehicles, we recommend going straight to the South Dakota DMV for registration and renewals. The process is very easy for you to do yourself. You will need your original out of state titles, a copy of your state driver license, social security number, and a Motor Vehicle and Boat Title & Registration Application. Take this paperwork or call a local county treasurer’s office to complete registration process. They will be able to tell you the appropriate fees pertaining to that county, send in the paperwork an wait for the tags to be returned.
With a South Dakota Title and Registration, you are not obliged to present US insurance, which in most cases will not work when in Mexico and you will be paying for a Mexican Policy anyway, which ends up saving you a lot of money and stress on unneeded US insurance. (We can provide referrals for your insurance needs.) Also another benefit is no Smog tests are needed or required, also saving you time, money and aggravation and avoiding the need to drive the vehicle back to the US to get checked.
Please remember that a Mexican citizen cannot legally drive your US plated vehicle and if stopped, the Mexican Customs and Highway Patrol can seize your vehicle. Mexican Citizens can drive Mexico Imported vehicles, and you can also sell the vehicle if that time comes, to a local.
When it comes to vehicles in Mexico and DMVs on both sides of the border, we’re here to help.
